Before starting, verify your head unit type. On the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W221), NTG 3.0 systems typically use the large rectangular slot, while NTG 3.5 uses an SD card-style slot.
Your kit is a CarPlay interface module designed to enable Apple CarPlay on the OEM system. Check that you have:
- CarPlay interface box (NTG 3.0 compatible)
- LVDS cables
- MOST fiber adapters
- AUX audio integration cable
- USB extension
- Optional: microphone + camera inputs
Turn off ignition and disconnect power if possible before starting.
Start by accessing the factory radio unit:
- Use a plastic lever to carefully pop off the bottom panel
- Remove the 2 bottem T20 screws
- Use a small flat screwdriver to pop open the 2 small latches covering the upper screws holding the radio tray in place, then unscrew them.
- Gently slide the folding tray towards the back of the car.
- This will now uncover 4 more screws holding the radio unit.
This is one of the simplest Mercedes head unit removals, as the unit comes out straight forward once screws are removed.
Behind the unit you will find:
- MOST fiber optic loop (purple connector)
- LVDS video cable (screen connection)
- Factory power harness
- AUX input (required for audio playback)
Carefully disconnect:
- LVDS screen cable
- Main power harness
Be gentle with fiber optics—do not bend sharply.

- Connect the Video cable:
Screen → CarPlay box (VIDEO IN)
CarPlay box → head unit (VIDEO OUT)

IMPORTANT: You need to unplug the fiber-optic 2 way connector. It is easily identifyable as its wires are purple.
- Using a small flat screwdriver, unclip it from the large power connector:
- Now you need to plug it back into the Carplay module's own connector as follows;
- Plug the Carplay module's harness (Power, Video connectors)
Ensure all connectors click firmly. Incorrect LVDS orientation will result in no display.
Before reassembling:
- Turn ignition ON
- Check boot screen of interface
- If no signal, verify LVDS orientation and fiber optic connection
If the image doesn't show properly, adjust DIP switches according to module label (varies by firmware, often “NTG 3.0 / 8+8 special”)
- Confirm system boots into OEM menu + CarPlay interface
Once successful, connect your phone and verify wireless CarPlay pairing works.
Once everything is connected:
- Tuck and secure all wiring behind the radio unit
- Reinstall radio unit and trim panels
- Tighten all the screws and put all the clips back in place
Final checks:
- CarPlay boots automatically on AUX input
- Steering wheel controls function (volume, track, mode switching)
- Reverse camera activates when shifting into reverse
- Audio plays through AUX (important step)
At this stage, the system should function as a fully integrated OEM-style Apple CarPlay upgrade inside your Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W221).
