DIY-Install

Many BMW models develop a well-known issue over time: the interior door pull handles become sticky, soft, or start degrading into a tacky surface. This is caused by the breakdown of the factory soft-touch coating due to heat, age, and UV exposure.

The following guide explains a practical fix using an aftermarket solution that avoids full OEM replacement and simplifies the process significantly.

Step 1 – Remove visible trim covers

Begin by removing the plastic covers that conceal the mounting screws.

First, carefully pry off the main interior handle trim cover using a plastic trim tool. Start at the top edge and work around slowly. The cover is clipped in and releases with moderate force.

Next, remove the small tweeter-style cover located near the upper corner of the door panel. This also clips in and exposes an additional hidden screw.

- Remove the trim covering the upper screw located next to the door lock pin. Remove the screw.

- Remove the trim covering the screw located on the side of the door panel. Remove the screw.

Step 2 – Remove all Torx screws

Using a T20 Torx bit, remove all visible screws securing the door panel. These are located in a few different places.

- On the door handle itself:

- On the bottom of the door card:

Ensure all screws are removed before attempting to pull the panel, as leaving even one in place can damage the panel clips.

Step 3 – Release and remove the door panel

Start at the lower edge of the door panel and insert a trim removal tool between the panel and door frame. Work around the perimeter to release each retaining clip.

The clips require firm but controlled force. Avoid pulling directly outward in one motion; instead, progressively release each section.

Once all clips are free, lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window channel and remove it partially from the door.

Place the panel on a stable surface or support it with a box to avoid stress on cables.

Step 4 – Disconnect wiring and cables

Behind the panel, disconnect all electrical connectors, including the window switch module and any lighting or speaker connections.

You can also disconnect the mechanical door release cable to give yourself more room to operate although it is not an obligation.

Ensure all connectors are fully released before moving the panel further.

Step 5 – Remove the original handle trim

From the exposed inner side of the door panel, locate the screws securing the interior handle trim assembly.

Remove these screws carefully. The factory part may also have plastic locking tabs that need to be pressed inward while gently pushing the trim outward.

Once released, remove the original handle trim.

Step 6 – Install the new handle trim

Position the replacement trim into the same location as the original part, ensuring correct alignment of all mounting points.

Reinstall and tighten the screws evenly. Do not overtighten, as plastic components can strip more easily than metal parts.

Ensure the piece is seated correctly and does not move or flex under light pressure.

Step 7 – Reassemble the door panel

Reconnect all electrical connectors and the door release cable, ensuring each is securely locked into place.

Align the door panel with the door frame and reinsert the upper edge into the window channel first. Then press along the perimeter to engage all clips.

Reinstall all Torx screws, then refit the plastic trim covers.

Finish by checking alignment and ensuring all panels sit flush without gaps or rattles.

Final Result

Once completed, the interior door handles are restored to a clean, solid finish with no sticky surface material.
